Bowen Therapy is a remedial bodywork technique that was developed by Tom Bowen in the 1950’s in Victoria, Australia. Tom treated literally thousands of people with this unique method (documented over 13,000 people in one year alone). Oswald Rentsch was one of six men whom Tom Bowen felt had a good understanding of how Tom worked and Oswald went on to teach the “Bowen Technique” after Tom died. Bowen Therapy is now widely recognised all over the world, with therapists in over 40 countries.
Bowen Therapy treatments are tailored to meet the needs of each individual. A person who has just sprained their ankle will require a different treatment than someone who is tense and stressed and needing help to relax.
Bowen works with the body to effectively trigger it to begin to repair and rebalance itself, releasing tension that has been causing pain. The Bowen Technique differs from other bodywork techniques because it stimulates the body to heal itself. There is no force or manipulation by the therapist – the technique involves gentle rolling moves performed on the body at specific locations over muscles, nerves, tendons and ligaments depending on the presenting symptoms. The Bowen moves are interspersed with necessary “pauses” enabling the body to integrate the responses from each set of moves. (NOTE: the therapist may leave the room during these essential and necessary pauses).
Bowen technique is deeply relaxing and restorative, causing the body to rebalance and realign itself after acute injury or chronic disease states.
Bowen therapy is safe to use on all persons from newborns and infants, children, teens, pregnancy and the elderly.
Bowen therapy has been used with success to help people suffering from a wide variety of health problems including:
- sleep problems
- digestive problems – Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases such Crohns,
- muscle pain and discomfort from chronic stress
- pain from injury anywhere to the body
- spinal and pelvic misalignments including scoliosis
- chronic sinusitis
- teething problems in children
- birth trauma – for mother AND for baby
- colic in babies
- behavioural problems in children
- headaches and migraines
- sore back
- knee problems
- feet problems such as bunions, hammer toes
- …many more conditions can be alleviated with Bowen therapy.
If you are suffering from a new and recent injury or health problem it would be reasonable to expect noticeable improvement with two or three sessions.
For chronic health problems of longer duration you may need to have around six weekly sessions and monthly follow ups but you should notice a shift towards improvement in the condition after the first or second treatment.
